The first thing that greets you on arrival in Leh is the thinness of the air. Nestled away in the laps of the Himalayas, Umling La is the highest motorable pass in the world. It shares an unmanned border with China and the terrain is unloving and arid. The ascent keeps getting tougher with dropping oxygen levels in the air. It’s difficult to acclimatize and it takes the human body around 48 hours to do so.
